O365 Transition Project

Project Overview:

All faculty/staff will continue to utilize Office 365/O365/Outlook email system.  Once permission has been received from the Higher Learning Commission, their email accounts will all be transitioned to a new email address (PFW.edu) before July 1, 2018.

***Note ~ there are two separate projects.  One is the faculty/staff email address name change.  The second is the Student Transition from their current Google email to Office 365/O365/Outlook.  For more information about the student transition, see the Student tab above.

 

Reasoning Behind the Change:

On July 1, 2018 our Fort Wayne campus will officially become a Purdue campus.  This transition will require ITS to change all email addresses to coincide with the new name.

Schedule of Implementation:

The tentative high-level project timeline is as follows:

February 2018 Testing (once HLC approval has been received)

April 2018 Transition for Faculty/Staff

Our project team is working within a small window due to the Higher Learning Commission’s (HLC) timing (they meet in February/March).  Due to the requirements regarding the name change which includes address and architectural revamps, all activity must take place between HLC’s approval (March) and July 1, 2018.

Impact:

Email addresses will change from IPFW.edu to PFW.edu, and all references to them must be updated.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:     Will my email address change?
A:      Yes.  It will contain the new campus name.

Q:     How long will my old "ipfw" email address work?
A:     We only have a very brief window where both addresses will work.  IPFW addresses will cease to function on July 1, 2018.

Q:     Will I still have access through my phone?
A:     Yes, but you will need to update your phone to reflect the new email address.  A communication will go out letting you know when to do this.

Faculty and Staff Email Update

With regard to our pending transition to the Purdue Fort Wayne* name, Information Technology Services is in the process of planning for an email address change for all faculty and staff accounts. These accounts will remain in our current email system (Office 365/Outlook) but will change from @ipfw.edu to @pfw.edu once we have approval from the Higher Learning Commission to move forward. Usernames and the contents of mailboxes, calendars, etc. will not be affected.

Student Email Transition from Google to Office 365

With regard to our pending transition to a Purdue managed campus, Information Technology Services will utilize this opportunity to transition all student email services from Google to Office 365/Outlook. This has many advantages to our students and the campus as a whole.

A tentative high-level project timeline is as follows:

December 2017 Hard timeline confirmed
February 2018 Testing
March 2018 Behind the scene changes and final notifications to students
April – June 1, 2018 Students can opt-in for new email services
June 2 – 30, 2018 Forced student conversion
October 2, 2018 Gmail shutdown
